Hippeas - Organic Chickpea Puffs at Costco

Costco sells a giant bag of Hippeas Organic Chickpea Puffs for $7.49. The chickpea chips can be found in the snack area of the warehouse near other items such as the tortilla chipsketo crackers, and the sweet potato crackers.

Costco Hippeas are sold in an 18 ounce bag and are vegan white cheddar flavored. The Hippeas are organic, certified gluten-free, non-gmo, and contain plant protein!

Plant Based Protein - Chickpea Puffs

I’m not a fan of the plant based protein craze that has gone on lately, as it seems that now almost any plant, nut, or seed item has a plant based protein logo on it.

The hippeas do have 4 grams of protein compared to the typical 1 or 2 grams of protein that traditional chips may have, but it really isn’t enough protein to move the needle in any significant way.

Benefits-of-Chickpeas

Chickpeas have been eaten for thousands of years, and I’m glad they are finally getting quite a bit more recognition because they are absolutely delicious, but I just don’t like this new marketing fad. It seems to dilute the meaning of plant protein.

Vegan White Cheddar Flavor?

The Hippeas that Costco sells are Vegan White Cheddar flavored, but what exactly does vegan flavored mean?

I’ve learned after tasting the chips, that do that have that typical vegan flavor that you find can sometimes find in vegan plant based foods.

Heavy on the Marketing

I understand the difference between a bag of chips on the shelf and one that never gets passed the farmers market stage is marketing, and Hippeas really does their marketing well.

Hippeas-Chickpea-Puffs

The bag is simple and clean looking with some magnificent colors that catch the eye, and they have the plant protein logo along with all the other health minded symbols.

The back of the bag includes a nice little area explaining all the reasons on why to eat chickpea puffs all while being punny, hip, and cool.

Costco Cost Comparison

How Much Do Hippeas Puffs Cost at Costco?

Costco sells the humongous 18 ounce bag of Hippeas Vegan White Cheddar Flavor for $7.49. I purchased this bag of hippeas when they were on sale for $4.99.

I got $2.50 off which is a massive discount of 33%. A Costco bag of Hippeas goes for $0.42 an ounce at retail and only $0.28 when on sale.

Hippeas-Chickpeas

This is an ok price for chips but a fantastic price for an organic bag of unique chickpea puffs.

Hippeas typically retail for quite a bit more than even Costco’s $0.42 an ounce price and this 18 ounce bag of Hippeas at $4.99 is an absolute steal.

Costco vs The Competition

Walmart sells a 4 ounce bag of Hippeas Vegan White Cheddar flavor for $2.98 or $0.75 an ounce. This is nearly double Costco’s retail price per ounce for Hippeas.

Target sells their 4 ounce bag for $3.19. Their Hippeas cost $0.80 per ounce, which, once again, is nearly double the price of Costco’s retail price per ounce.

When on sale, it seems like a no-brainer to buy the giant sized 18 ounce Costco bag for $2 more than what you would pay at other retailers for a 4 ounce bag.

Hippeas Chickpea Puffs Taste Test

Hippeas Color & Texture

The first thing I noticed about these Hippeas is the color. They are a fairly blandish yellow/white which is quite the contrast from the bag.

This is to be expected as they come from chickpeas and aren’t artificially colored, but it was something that stuck out to me.

Costco-Chickpea-Puffs

Aside from color, the hippeas are similar to your typical cheese puff style chip in shape and texture. The only noticeable difference is they are just a touch more full than an airy cheeto puff.

I love Chickpeas

Before I get into taste, I have to say that I am a big chickpea fan, I love snacking on roasted chickpeas and I find hummus to be extremely delicious.

Hippeas-from-Costco

That being said, I didn’t enjoy the vegan white cheddar hippeas from Costco.

Hippeas Chickpea Puff Taste

The white cheddar flavor was light, and truly indeed, did the chickpeas puffs have that vegan flavor. I don’t care for the vegan taste and I’m not a fan of other vegan foods that I’ve purchased from Costco that have that same taste such as the MorningStar Sausages and Alpha Plant Based Breakfast Sandwich.
Chickpea-Puffs

It does answer the question of why vegan is in the name, and that’s because there is that vegan taste. No false advertisements there.

The Family Loves Them

That being said, my wife loves the puffs. My young kids love the chickpea puffs, and my wife loves that my kids love the puffs.

They really enjoy the snack and can reap some of the benefits of a healthy chickpea puff/chip rather than typical junk food chips.

Costco Hippeas Nutritional Information & Calories

How Many Calories in Hippeas from Costco?

Each serving of Hippeas from Costco is going to be 1 ounce and will contain 170 calories. Those calories will come from 4.5 grams of fat, 15 grams of carbs (3 grams of fiber), and 4 grams of plant based protein.

Costco-Hippeas-Nutritional-Information-and-Calories

The chickpea puffs are made from chickpeas instead of potatoes, but their nutritional label isn’t much different than traditional chips. Typically, chips will have 150 calories or so per ounce and have comparable macronutrients to these Costco Hippeas.

Benefits of Eating Chickpeas

Calories wise, there is nothing really special about Hippeas, but the real benefit is going to be the nutritional value of the chickpeas.

Chickpeas are one of those foods that are just all around good for you.

Hippeas-Chickpea-Puff-Costco-Ingredients

Chickpeas are packed with nutrients and contain a significant amount more of vitamins and minerals. For a snacking chip, this is absolutely awesome and makes them worth eating over regular potato chips or other junk food.

In addition to minerals and vitamins, chickpeas are great for digestion, weight control, cardiovascular health, and they help control blood sugar. These Hippeas puffs are great for taking on healthy chickpeas in a tasty snack form.

  1. COSTCO, GREENVILLE, SC HAS NOT HAD ANY HIPPEAS IN STOCK FOR MONTHS. DID THEY STOP SELLING THEM OR WILL THEY BE BACK IN STOCK ANYTIME SOON?

  2. These are very tasty, but they exploit an FDA labeling loophole of less than 0.5 gram of sugar per serving = “zero added sugars” on the nutritional label. Yes, a cheap trick to get me to buy and to want more after eating “one serving”. I will buy anyone a bag of these who can eat one serving per day.
