What is Cold Brew Coffee?

To put it simply, cold brew is coffee that is brewed with cold water instead of hot water. Traditional coffee is made by pouring hot water over coffee grinds and only takes a few minutes to make.

Cold brew is closer to “coffee tea” as coffee beans are steeped in cold water for 12 to 24 hours. The end result is cold brew which is usually slightly sweeter, more intense and less acidic.

Cold Brew vs Iced Coffee

While both are cold coffee drinks, they are actually quite different in how they are brewed. As mentioned earlier, cold brew is coffee that is steeped overnight.

Iced Coffee is coffee brewed at double strength to compensate for the dilution when combined with ice. Both coffees are served cold but are rather different.

Fun Fact: Costco’s Mocha Freeze and Latte Freeze from the food court are made with Colombian Cold Brew.

How Much Caffeine Is In Each Can of Costco Cold Brew Coffee?

Each can of Costco Kirkland Signature Cold Brewed Coffee will contain 225 mg of caffeine per can. This is an astonishingly high amount and the equivalent of almost 2 and a half cups of regular hot coffee.

Each cup of regular coffee contains approximately 95 mg of caffeine.

Even the can label states this Costco cold brew is the equivalent of 2.3 cups of coffee. This can of cold brew will do the job! It is not recommended for individuals under 18 or anyone who is pregnant or persons sensitive to caffeine.

How Much Does Kirkland Signature Cold Brew Coffee Cost at Costco?

Costco’s price has gone up a few dollars over the past year, and they now sell the 12-pack of Kirkland Signature 100% Colombian Coffee for $15.99.

Inconsistent Tab Placement

At the $15.99 price tag, each can of cold brew goes for $1.33. While it is still a very fair price for cold brew coffee, it is always saddening when the cost of anything at Costco increases.

Costco vs The Competition

My local grocery store Tom Thumb/Safeway, sells 11 oz single serving cold brew cans and bottles for about $3.99 each, depending on exact size and brand. Costco’s cold brews come in at one-third the price. Wow!

Costco Cold Brew Coffee Taste Test

I have mixed thoughts on the taste of Kirkland Signature’s Cold Brew. It tastes different from regular hot coffee, and I’m in some ways better and some ways worse.

Smooth As Can Be

The cold brew is very, very smooth. I never thought of coffee as unsmooth, but I can, without a doubt, call this cold brew very smooth.

I can’t tell if I’m not a fan of the smoothness or if I’m just so used to drinking hot coffee and regular iced coffee that the smoothness feels so out of place.

There is also less acidity and bitterness in the cold brew compared to regular hot coffee.

Taste of Chocolate

The coffee does have a very full flavor. There is even a little hint of chocolate or sweetness in the cold black coffee, which is interesting to me.

Is There A Metallic Taste?

One of the main complaints I have read about online that I have not personally experienced is a metallic taste to the coffee that may come from the can.

There is a lot of talk on reddit and other sites about how this can negatively affect the coffee.

I Enjoyed It

I would have no problem taking down a cold brew with a warm muffin or a hot breakfast of hashbrownseggs, and sausage.

Cold Brew Coffee Unique Uses and Versatility

The very nice thing about cold brew is that it is super versatile. Cold brew can be combined with other ingredients to make some really unique and fun drinks. Here are some of my favorite uses of the Kirkland Signature cold brew coffee.

Iced

Adding ice is the most common way to drink Kirkland Signature Cold brew. You can easily make it a delicious iced coffee with a handful of ice cubes. This will also help dilute the caffeine.

Additionally, you can add milk or other flavors to make a latte or a flavored iced coffee.

Hot Coffee

Believe it or not, cold brew doesn’t have to be drunk cold. You can mix cold brew with hot water and turn it into a traditional hot coffee.

It may have a slightly different taste, but it does the job when you need a hot coffee.

Coffee Cocktails

A few other very fun options include adding spirits or some Kirkland Signature Liquor to make a hard cold brew coffee or a cocktail. Sounds like a good night to me.

More Uses!

And finally, mix the cold brew with some soda water to make it bubbly or add it to a protein shake for an extra flavor and energy boost!

Kirkland Signature Cold Brew Nutritional Information

How Many Calories In Costco Cold Brew?

Each serving of coffee will be 1 can or 325ml (11 ounces) and will contain 15 calories. Those 15 calories are made up of 0 grams of fat, 2 grams of carbs, and 0 grams of protein.

More Hidden Macronutrients

One interesting thing to note about this nutritional label is that there are only 2 grams of carbs but 15 total calories.

Carbs, proteins, and fat have a fixed amount of calories per gram. Carbs and protein have 4 calories per gram, and fat has 9 calories.

If there are only 2 grams of carbs in total in the cold brew, then there should be only 8 calories, but instead, there are 15 calories. Additional calories come from a combination of fat, carbs, and protein and do not hit the threshold where they count as an additional gram on the nutritional label.

Obviously, this is very minor, but something worth nothing.
